ACADEMICS
At Altadena Arts Magnet, children are taught how to think, not what to think. Our dedicated teachers use evidence-based approaches including Heggerty Literacy instruction, iReady Math, StemScopes Science and TCI Social Studies. We provide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports to celebrate each child’s unique abilities, perspectives, and interests and provide opportunities for voice and choice
INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP
Our students and teachers are supported by an experienced leadership team of full-time instructional specialists, including our Art Teacher, MTSS Coach and Behavior Interventionist.
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS MAGNET
Arts are an integral part of a well-rounded education, boosting engagement and achievement. We provide weekly instruction in all art forms, nurturing the whole child and inspiring students to achieve their best.
Music
- All Kindergarten through second grade students build a strong musical foundation in weekly music classes where they receive instruction in aural skills, sight singing, rhythm and choral singing.
- Third grade students receive weekly instruction in ukelele, recorder and strings.
- Fourth-Fifth grade students participate weekly instruction in concert band, guitar or rock band.
Dance
- K-2nd grade students experience fun, fitness, and fundamentals of dance.
- 3rd-5th grade students learn classical, modern, and contemporary technique.
Theater
All students get 8 weeks of theater instruction integrating arts and all subject content into masterful theatrical performances. There is a fall play for K-3rd and a spring musical for 4 & 5th in conjunction with the 6-8 grade students at our sister school, Eliot Arts Magnet.
Visual Arts
All students receive art classes weekly to deepen their understanding of science, math, history, and literature through engaging discrete and integrated art lessons.
FRENCH DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM
Our program is based on a two-way, 90:10 model. Two-way means that classrooms are composed of both native English speakers and French speakers, so students can support each other in their development of both languages. The 90:10 model signifies that the kindergarten curriculum is taught 90% in French and 10% in English. At each subsequent grade level, the amount of instruction in English is increased by 10%, so that by fourth grade, students are taught 50% in each language.
These program characteristics are research-based and critical to the development of bilingualism, biliteracy, academic success, and multicultural understanding.
